Christie’s achieved strong prices for Buddhist Art, Song Ceramics and Seals

Chinese Works of Art continued to demonstrate a strong market lead in Buddhist Art, exemplified by the Buddhist Art Under The Empire, which totalled HK$35,502,500 and set a new auction record for a Monk's Cap Ewer, which achieved HK$9,125,000 / US$1,183,325. A notable sale highlight include a group of Buddhist Art from a private Asian collection which exceeded its pre-auction high estimate and was 88% sold by lot. Proceeds from the sale will benefit mental health charities in Asia.

Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art also saw brilliant results for scholar's objects, including a group of seals which was 100% sold, led by an Imperial ‘Hanwei Jingji’ Soapstone Seal, which achieved HK$4,205,000 / US$545,302.

Strong prices were also achieved for Song Ceramics including An Important Qingbai Lobed Ewer which fetched HK$2,125,000 / US$275,569, and A Fine and Rare Carved Ding ‘Lotus’ Incense Box and Cover which realised HK$3,000,000 / US$389,038. Both lots achieved multiples over their low estimates.

The season, Christie's also expanded its digital line-up with the first cross-category Asian Art online sale in the region. Cultivating Delight: Collecting Chinese Art realised a total of HK$13,282,500. The Chinese Paintings offered in the auction sold 78% by lot, achieving 217% of the total pre-sale low estimate, while the top lot of the sale was an Important and Very Rare Bamboo Root Carving of a Frog which fetched HK$2,125,000, 3.5 times its pre-sale high auction.
