Art from antiquity to the 20th century

  • Event date 2 - 10 July
  • Event location London
Connect with art from antiquity to the 20th century this summer as Classic Week returns to London with six live auctions of extraordinary art and objects, whose every detail tells a story.
Discover masterworks, including Quentin Metsys’ rediscovered The Madonna of the Cherries, Titian’s Rest on the Flight to Egypt, George Stubbs’ Mares and Foals in an extensive landscape and Frans Hals’ Portrait of a gentleman of the de Wolff family, all to be offered in the Old Masters Part I sale on 2 July.

The Exceptional Sale offers a unique opportunity to acquire remarkable items imbued with history, including Pelé’s 1962 FIFA World Cup winner’s medal and a bridesmaid’s dress designed by Norman Hartnell for the royal wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, alongside a stunning Greek bronze head of Eros from the Sydney J. Lamon collection.

On 2 July, the Old Master Prints sale features Giulio Campagnola and Domenico Campagnola’s charming Shepherds in a Landscape from The Collection of Sam Josefowitz, alongside beautiful examples of Albrecht Dürer’s Saint Eustace and Melencolia I and a complete First Edition of Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos, among others. On 3 July, explore fine European and British paintings, sculpture, drawings and watercolours in the Old Masters Part II auction. Additionally, the Antiquities sale presents a selection of artifacts from ancient cultures, led by an Attic black-figured amphora depicting Herakles’ Tenth Labor.

Concluding this fantastic season is the Valuable Books and Manuscripts sale on 10 July, led by a pair of English table globes that transport you to the Age of Exploration, the beautiful Gouvetz Hours and a 1962 letter from Ringo Starr announcing he has joined The Beatles.

We invite you to explore all this and more at our King Street galleries from 28 June to 9 July.
