This winter, Christie’s France put Asian Art and Furniture in the spotlight with two exceptional sales, which took place mid-December: From Beijing to Versailles, the V.W.S. Collection followed by Art d’Asie.

With a total of €10,293,822 gathering buyers from 34 countries, the auction paid tribute to the precious legacy of a passionate collector. It was while fleeing Russia that he found refuge in Shanghai and began an extraordinary collection of Chinese porcelain, snuff bottles and jades, true stars of the sale with remarkable results such as a white jade ‘Longevity’ bowl and cover Lian sold €844,200. He also showed a pronounced taste for the French decorative arts, such as a Charles X secretaire à abattant sold for €340,200, more than three times its initial estimate.

Two days later, the Art d’Asie sale presented a very special selection of works spanning over 3,000 years of Asian art, achieving a total of €7,769,064, more than double its initial estimate. Highlights of the sale included an exceptional 16th-17th dynasty gilt-bronze Buddhist triad which reached €1,902,000 as well as a sublime Qi Baishi, Ducks, sold for €478,800.
