To mark the 25th anniversary from the landmark exhibition of the George Ortiz collection at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Christie’s will be bringing back to the capital a curated selection of its many masterpieces.
Patron, humanist and passionate connoisseur, George Ortiz (1927-2013) created one of the most important collections of ancient art still in private hands. The 1994 exhibition, one of the few precious examples of private collection displayed in public institutions, showcased the broad variety and exquisite quality of the artefacts, spanning from the Ancient Near East to the Pacific world, with ancient Greece as the main focus.
G. Max Bernheimer, International Head of Antiquities at Christie’s and curator of the 25th Anniversary exhibition, together with the Ortiz family, who kindly loaned the works, have created a selection of objects which reflect the importance of the collection, and celebrate the success of the original exhibition and its lasting legacy.
