The Hermès Himalaya deconstructed
Why collectors are in thrall to the extraordinary craftsmanship of the ultimate Hermès bag — and why the maison’s diamond Himalaya is the most desirable handbag in existence. Illustrated with lots offered at Christie’s

In the video above, Christie’s international head of Handbags and Accessories Rachel Koffsky Parker discusses the iconic Hermès Himalaya
The ravishing Hermès Himalaya Birkin is considered the holy grail for handbag collectors, while the Himalaya Kelly is fabled as ‘the rarest handbag in the world’. How did these objects achieve such cachet? The answer lies in their construction — a striking blend of superlative design and fabulous materials that makes each one a wearable work of art. Below, we explore the qualities that have come to define the Himalaya handbag.
The dyeing process that gives the bag its name
The designation ‘Himalaya’ does not refer to the geographical origin of the bag, but rather to its delicate gradations of colour. With smoky grey fading into a pearly white, the bag’s tonal range is reminiscent of the majestic, snow-capped Himalayas. Crafted from Nile crocodile hide, each Himalaya handbag undergoes a dyeing process that is painstaking, time-consuming and exponentially more difficult as the shades lighten. It takes great skill and an expert eye to create the subtle gradation from immaculate snowy white to rocky grey.

The ultimate expression of Hermès artistry
The Hermès Himalaya is a meticulously crafted handbag. Bringing together precious materials and the artisanal skill associated with the brand’s equestrian heritage, it is widely regarded as the ultimate expression of the artistry and tradition of the historic maison.
A collecting phenomenon
The introduction of the original series of Himalaya Birkins caused huge excitement among collectors. Handbag enthusiasts around the world recognised the Himalaya’s rarity and exquisite craftsmanship. Consequently, in a response to fervent demand, Hermès began to craft a limited number Himalaya Kelly bags for top clients.

Produced in very limited numbers, the Himalaya Kelly is considered by many a perfect marriage, bringing together the signature tonal range of the Himalaya and the elegant profile of the Kelly. In its rarity and beauty, the Himalaya Kelly is both an heirloom and a work of art.

The most desirable handbag in existence
In 2016, at Christie’s 30th-anniversary Hong Kong auction, a Himalaya Birkin 30 sold for a world-record price of HK$2.3 million. A year later, the world record was broken when a Himalaya Birkin 30 achieved HK$2.9 million. The upward trend has continued in more recent years, with a Himalaya Birkin 25 selling for HK$3.6 million in 2025.
A Himalaya Birkin 30 realised £162,500 at Christie’s in London in 2018, becoming the most expensive handbag ever sold at a European auction. Before the year’s end, that record was broken by a Himalaya Birkin 35, which sold for £236,750.
In 2020, a Himalaya Kelly 25 sold for HK$3.4 million, a record price for a Hermès Kelly, but the record was broken once more the following year by a Himalaya Kelly 28, which achieved HK$4 million, again at Christie’s in Hong Kong.
These incredible results have only confirmed what handbag collectors worldwide already knew — that the diamond Himalaya is the most desirable handbag in existence.
