Christie's - 23-30 November 2011 Milan
ITALIAN ELEGANCE
After the success of the May sales, which confirmed the strength, and international reach of the Italian market, we are now approaching the autumn sales in Milan. This season, in addition to the usual sales of Modern and Contemporary Art, Old Master Paintings and Jewellery, we have a surprise: a special, one-off sale of Coins and Medals, comprising two important private Italian collections of this category.

The month’s sales include great quality, from masterpieces by Fontana, vintage jewels dating back to the 19th century and precious 18th century landscapes, to coins that reveal Papal history and stories from the Tuscan towns of the Middle Ages.

I hope you can join us for this exciting season at the pre-sale exhibitions. If you are unable to attend the sales in person, I invite you to browse the catalogues and register to bid online at christies.com.

ITALIAN ABSTRACTION
The sale features a rich selection of works that embody the most interesting interpretations of Abstraction in Italian art, from the Futurists to Contemporary artists. Among the most interesting works we find a rigorous yet harmonious composition by Tancredi, dated 1959. The international breadth of the sale includes works such as 380 Wrapped trees, executed by Christo in 1969, and belonging to the ambitious series of works related to wrapping, in this case the trees that border the Champs Elysées in Paris.

VINTAGE FINERY
The sale includes a refined selection of vintage signed pieces, from the late 19th century creations of archeological jewellery by Castellani and Giuliano, true anticipators of the Made in Italy style, who are distinguished for the rediscovery of ancient decorations and techniques; to the creative frenzy of the Dolce Vita, expressed in the exuberant pieces crafted by Bulgari in the 1950s.

BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES
Landscapes and views from various Italian regions show the importance of Italy as the preferred destination for the Grand Tourists of the 18th century. The genre flourished as the demand grew for foreign travellers to bring home visual memories of the cities they had visited. The twin canvases by Andrea Locatelli depict a landscape around Rome, evoking a lost classical beauty animated by timeless figures.

GOLDEN ICONS
The highlights of this one-off, special sale are two important private collections. One is composed of papal coins, some of which are truly extraordinary for the precision of the details. The other brings us back to the Middle Ages in Tuscany: its coins, depicting religious and political symbols, relate the history of the city-states of Siena, Pisa and Livorno.
