John Constable

John Constable fu una delle figure artistiche più originali emerse nella pittura europea dell’inizio del XIX secolo. L’impatto della sua opera, come quella del suo quasi contemporaneo J.M.W. Turner, avrebbe continuato a risuonare in Gran Bretagna e a livello internazionale per molto tempo dopo la sua morte.

Nato nel 1776, Constable crebbe nel villaggio di East Bergholt, nel Suffolk, e proprio quel villaggio e la campagna circostante gli avrebbero fornito le fonti più costanti di ispirazione artistica. La sua scelta di concentrarsi sul puro paesaggio come soggetto principale della sua arte, privo di qualsiasi riferimento storico, religioso o mitologico esplicito, unita alla tecnica peculiare che sviluppò per rappresentarlo, sfidò le ortodossie artistiche dell’epoca e da allora ha ispirato generazioni di artisti.

Le opere di Constable sono celebrate per la loro rappresentazione dettagliata, suggestiva e drammatica della natura. Suo padre, Golding Constable, un prospero commerciante di grano e carbone, aveva ereditato l’affitto del mulino di Flatford nel 1764, e Constable trovò in quel mulino ad acqua infinite possibilità artistiche. Nel corso della sua intera carriera dipinse più vedute di Flatford e dei suoi immediati dintorni che di qualsiasi altro soggetto. Il suo dipinto The Lock è stato venduto da Christie’s nel 2012 per un prezzo record mondiale d’asta di 22.441.250 sterline. Quest’opera, insieme a molte altre, dimostra l’abilità di Constable nel cogliere l’interazione tra luce e atmosfera, che egli definiva il «chiaroscuro della natura».

L’impegno di Constable nella pittura di paesaggio era considerato rivoluzionario all’epoca. Lavorava prevalentemente all’aperto, realizzando schizzi direttamente dal vero, che in seguito trasformava in opere finite nel suo studio. La sua dedizione nel rappresentare il mondo naturale così come lo vedeva costituiva sia un rifiuto dei paesaggi idealizzati popolari all’epoca, sia un precursore dei successivi sviluppi della Scuola di Barbizon, del Romanticismo francese e del movimento impressionista.

John Constable morì nel 1837; la sua eredità come uno dei più importanti pittori paesaggisti della storia dell’arte rimane immutata. Le sue opere, come quelle esposte all’Anglesey Abbey, tra cui la sua iconica rappresentazione del Waterloo Bridge, continuano a essere celebrate per la loro rappresentazione fedele del paesaggio inglese, rendendolo una figura intramontabile nell’arte britannica.
