Since the news regarding the coronavirus outbreak, Christie’s has been monitoring the situation globally to assess the potential impact to our clients, our employees and to the business. As a result, we have taken the decision to reschedule the Christie’s Important Watches auction, due to be held in Dubai on 11 April, to October, so that it will coincide with Christie’s annual Middle Eastern modern and contemporary art auction and provide the best sale environment. In addition, our curated exhibition Head to Head: A dialogue between Marwan and Baselitz due to be held in April has also been re-scheduled to November.
Regionally we will continue to serve our clients in the Middle East via our fully operational office in Dubai. Furthermore, we are showcasing Middle Eastern Art highlights as well as a fine selection of watches in our renovated exhibition space at DIFC.
As a business we remain well positioned, underpinned by the fact that our bespoke digital marketing and direct, personal client engagement continues to ensure that art consigned for sale is successfully publicized and connected to potential buyers. We have longstanding experience of working with global collectors and advisors to ensure that works of art can be successfully presented in a bespoke way.
The health and safety of our employees and clients are the continuing priority and our thoughts during this difficult time are with all the people and areas affected by the virus.

In May 2006, art market history was made when Christie's held its first auction of International Modern & Contemporary Art in the Middle East. Since then, Christie's has gone on to sell over US$215 million worth of Middle Eastern Art art in Dubai and firmly established itself as the leading auction house for that sale category in the region having more than 70% of the market and achieving more than 450 world records for Middle Eastern artists. Following 22 consecutively successful sales of Middle Eastern Art in Dubai, Christie’s will be hosting its inaugural sale of Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art at Christie’s King Street in London on 25 October 2017, to satisfy the growing international appetite for that market.
Since the re-launch of stand-alone Important Watch sales in Dubai in October 2013, Christie’s has consistently achieved high results, selling more than $26.5 million worth of watches with an average of more than 92% sell-through rate. In March 2017, Christie’s once again made history in Dubai by achieving the highest total for any watch auction in the Middle East amounting to more than $5 million and by selling the most expensive watch ever sold in the region (A Patek Philippe ref. 2499/100 perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch for $499,500). As an official partner of the annual Dubai Watch Week held each November, Christie’s is pleased to participate in a series of lectures and panel discussions as well as showcasing highlights of upcoming global watch sales.
Our Watch and Modern & Contemporary Art auctions in Dubai take place in March, during the Dubai Art Week. Featured alongside our sales exhibitions, collectors also have the opportunity to view international highlights from upcoming sales of Watches and Handbags, as well as unique jewellery pieces available for private sale.
In addition to the regular auctions, Christie’s is keen to encourage and support educational opportunities and holds exhibitions, educational seminars and supports academic initiatives throughout the region. These events have been held in the past in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait and Bahrain, including non-selling curated exhibitions, Christie’s Education courses and book launches. Furthermore, Christie’s has regularly supported various charitable activities, including works sold at the Dubai auctions, and has helped to raise more than $25 million for Middle Eastern charities.
At present, we are actively seeking consignments in all collecting areas for inclusion in upcoming sales. Christie’s Dubai provides estimates for all collecting categories.
