A CANTON CARVED AND PIERCED 'HONGS OF CANTON' IVORY BRISÉ FAN
LATE 18TH CENTURY, 1790
The fan is finely decorated to one side with a scene depicting 'The Hongs of Canton'. The scene includes various ships and figures by the dock with factories and the flags of Denmark, Spain, the U.S., Sweden, Britain and the Netherlands.

Lot Essay

The Hongs of Canton, or the Thirteen Factories was an area of Canton where the first foreign trade was allowed to conduct business in China in the 18th century. Factories were quarters for the foreigners outside the city walls in Guangzhou, and were business markets, not actual factories where goods were produced.
