A BLACK-OVERLAY WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE
YANGZHOU SCHOOL, 1840-1900
The bottle is delicately carved through the opaque black overlay to the opaque white ground on one side with three small pheasants perched on rocks beneath a four-character inscription that reads tong tang wu de ('Five generations under the same roof'). The other side is decorated with two confronting pheasants perched on branches beneath an arching branch.
2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) high, quartz stopper
