A Carved and Gilt Wood Manuscript Cover
Tibet, Bon, 14th/15th Century
Carved and gilt with four Bon Transcendent Lords seated in niches within a beaded border, flanked by kirttimukha masks and surrounded by foliate scrolls centered by a pair of confronting dragons at top and a lotus flower below, the reverse with two registers of eight smaller stupas and six larger stupas separated by pillars and with the Tibetan alphabet incised at the lower rim, one side carved and gilt with four 'Auspicious Emblems'

Lot Essay

The Bon tradition has 121 special forms of stupas, some of which are depicted here. The Four Transcendent Lords of the current eon are 'the Mother' Satrig Ersang, the 'God' Shenla Wökar, 'the Procreator' Sangpo Bumtri, and 'the Teacher' Shenrap Miwo.
