Lot Essay
Georg Friedrich Brander (1713-1783) studied the mechanical arts at the University of Altdorf, and founded a workshop in Augsburg c. 1735, making instruments for astronomy, geodesy and physics, and becoming the most famous German precision instrument maker of the eighteenth century. Fine graticules were required for the eyepieces of astronomical telescopes and for scientific microscopes, which Brander developed during the 1770's.
