For the artist see George Lazarnick, Netsuke and Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures, (Honolulu, 1982), p.750, where Lazarnick notes that the artist exhibited some of his work at the Columbian Exhibition in the USA in 1893 and was an "expert carver in ivory".
