The circular enamel dial with Roman chapters signed 'Planchon à Paris', within a tooled bezel supported by a draped caryatid and flanked by four foliate-mounted columns surmounted by ram's heads and berried laurel leaves, on a stepped-moulded base with palmette mounts and on scrolled foliate paw feet embellished with flowerheads, with pierced swan and foliate pendulum, numbered '0700' to the back, the base cut and possibly altered

Lot Essay

This mantel clock derives from a closely related model of clock with further griffins to the base, as visible on a design of Percier et Fontaine 'Cheminée exécutée sur un fond en glace dans la Galerie du Pce S...en Pologne', illustrated in J. Morley, Regency Designs 1790-1840, London, 1993, p. 302, ill. 233.
