This parlour chair, with its open-fretted vase splat, relates to that featured on the early l8th century trade-sheet of the St. Pauls Church-yard cabinet-maker Thomas Cleare (active c.1720-c.1740). The latter chair was described at the time as having an India back and was associated with Chinese patterned chairs imported by the East India trading companies (see A. Bowett, "The India-backed Chair, 1715-40", Apollo, January, 2003 pp.3-9 and fig.9).
