CASE: with boxwood and ebony line inlays and tulipwood crossbanding, brass-bound bell top with pen-work decoration and urn finials, the front with gilt-brass caryatid mounts, brass quarter frets to the brass-framed front door, the sides with handles above cast mask frets DIAL: 8 in. wide repainted dial with inner concentric calendar, strike/silent to the arch, signed 'JOHN TAYLOR/LONDON', pierced and engraved gilt-brass hands MOVEMENT: six ring-turned pillars, triple chain fusees with verge escapement, striking the quarters on a nest of seven bells and the hours on further bell, foliate and scroll engraved back plate

John Taylor is known to have made clocks for the Spanish market. There are several examples of table clocks by him in the Spanish Royal Collection (see J. Ramon Colon De Carvajal, Catalogo de Relojes Del Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 1987, pp.43-52). It is therefore feasible that the dial of the present clock was originally inscribed in Spanish.
