The table's elegant base with its open stem and scroll legs derives from patterns for 'claw tables' and 'tea kettle stands' published by John Ince and William Mayhew in their Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl. XIII and XIV) as well as 'bason stands' in Thomas Chippendale's Director of the same year, pl. LV.
