A GEORGE IV GOLD-LINED COMPOSITION SNUFF-BOX WITH ENAMEL MINIATURE
circa 1825/1830, the miniature possibly Swiss or French, circa 1840/1860
Rectangular black composition box with concave sides, the lid applied with an oval enamel on gold miniature of a Rococo lady in fur-bordered blue silk gown and holding a fan, called Marquise du Deffand according to the an inscription on the counter-enamel, the thumbpiece cast with a foliate scrolling cartouche, the inside gold-lined and engraved with a presentation inscription

Provenance
According to an old inscription engraved at the inside of the lid, 'Given by Sir John Cathcart, Bart., to Henry, 8th Duke of Beaufort (1824-1899), in 1864.

Lot Essay

The Marquise du Deffand (1697-1780) was one of the most celebrated French salon hostesses. Famous for her wit, she ran a brilliant salon frequented by leading figures in Paris literary society. She was a friend of Voltaire, Montesquieu, d'Alembert and Horace Walpole.
