Amber has long been prized for it's transulcent beauty, and in earlier times for its magical qualities, favoured in 16th and 17th Century Germany. A comparable 20th Century German chess set of amber depicting figures in a similar style and posture is illustrated in Zug Der Könige, Chess Collectors Catalogue, Munich 1988, figure 67.
