With brass grip, single steel branch guard, brass crosspiece bearing the Phrygian Cap device of the Revolution, double-edged blade, ornate brass scabbard with inset panels of red cloth (replaced), ornate chape and twin suspension-rings

Lot Essay

The Ecole de Mars (named after the Roman god of War) was established in June 1794 as an academy for 3,500 potential officers. It was not a success, and was disbanded less than five months later, to the great delight of the students. Four of its pupils did however become Generals under the 1st Empire.
