School of Ogawa Haritsu, Edo period (18th-19th century), with inlaid red seal Kan
The top and sides of the rectangular wood box decorated in polychrome and gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, carved red lacquer (tsuishu) and metal, ceramic, mother-of-pearl and bone inlay with banana leaves, the underside of the lid decorated in polychrome lacquer, ceramic, mother-of-pearl, bone and bamboo inlay with a pilgrim's backpack against a black ground applied with sparse nashiji and silver flakes, fitted with a slate inkstone and an enamelled copper water dropper, the wood exterior with deep grooves and grain polished dark brown, seal on interior of lid
