This commode can be attributed to Jacques Dubois (maître 1742) based on a group of commodes stamped by him that share the same the unusual combination of striking directional veneers framed by richly sculpted ormolu mounts. They include one offered anonymously at Christie’s, London, 5 July 2001 (lot 256). Another closely related commode by Dubois which also shares this combination is illustrated in J. Nicolay, L’Art et la Manière des Maitres Ebénistes Français Au XVIII Siècle Vol I, Paris, 1976, p.160 fig 10 and a third example at Waddesdon Manor (G. de Bellaigue, The James A. De Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Furniture Clocks and Gilt Bronzes Vol I, London, 1974, p. 219).
