Jean-Aldebert Wowitz or Vovis, maître in 1767

Originally from Germany, little is known of Vovis, whose workshops were is the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, and later rue Traversiere. (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIII Siecle, Paris, 1989, p. 860). A marquetry table by Vovis was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1942 and later sold anonymously Christie's, New York, 29 - 30 November 2012, lot 68.
