Provenance

Frederick Augustus I (1670-1733), Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, known as Augustus II the Strong, whose porcelain collection was partly removed to the Johanneum in Dresden in 1876.

Lot Essay

The Johanneum marks denote that these dishes were in the Collection of Augustus The Strong, and housed in the Japanese Palace in Dresden. Johanneum was 'the building at Dresden, now a museum, containing the former Royal Saxon Porcelain Collection started and largely formed in the so-called Japanese Palace by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony. The specimens belonging to the old Collection bear marks referring to an inventory begun in 1721' (W.B. Honey, European Ceramic Art, pp.337 and 338). A dish of comparable size and with Johanneum inventory marks is in the Salting Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (ill. W. B. Honey, Guide to the Later Chinese Porcelain, London, 1927, plate 118; and exhibited, Porcelain for Palaces, 1650-1750, London, 1990, no. 257, p. 236). A pair of comparable Imari dishes with Johanneum inventory marks was sold, Christie's, London, 11 July 2006, lot 177 (£15,600 including premium).
