Lot Essay

The subject of this plaque was sketched by Vasilii Dmitrievich Polenov (1844-1927) in numerous variants between 1876 and 1885, when the final version in oil was painted. This now hangs in the Polenov Musuem, and another version dated 1888 is in the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg.
