A PAIR OF CARVED WOOD FIGURES OF GUANYIN ON LIONS
MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
Guanyin is seated on the lion's back, the right hand of one figure held in vitarkamudra. Each serene figure is carved with a full face and downcast eyes and the hair is swept back from her forehead and tied beneath a scarf, two plaits fall down her shoulders. The robes fall in loose drapes and are open at the chest to reveal a necklace. The lions' manes, tails and facial features are finely detailed. Traces of gilt and red, green and black pigment can be seen.
7 7/8 in. (20 cm.) high
Provenance
Property from a Private Swiss Collection, amassed between 1963 and 1980.
