A PAIR OF CLOISONNE ENAMEL FIGURES OF CRANES
QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820)
Each crane is modelled with a long slender neck elegantly curved in an 'S'-shape, surmounted by a red crest embellished with black spots. The slender body is predominantly enamelled in white within gilt outline, the wings and tail feathers intricately detailed in shades of green, yellow, red, and black. The cranes stand sturdily with long legs detailed with elaborate scales and claws supported on a circular plinth decorated with stylised flower-heads on a turquoise ground.

A pair of figures of cranes of similar design and size, but on a taller hexagonal base is illustrated in Colourful, Elegant, and Exquisite: A Special Exhibition of Imperial Enamel Ware from Mr. Robert Chang's Collection, Suzhou, 2007, p. 14-15. Two pairs of closely related cranes on circular stands were sold at Sotheby's London, 25 May 1965, lot 32. Another comparable pair of cranes supported on tortoises from the Estate of Mary Viscountess Rothermere was sold at Christie's New York, 2 June 1994, lot 82. Also compare with an identical pair of cranes from the Mandel Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2012, lot 3924.
