A PAIR OF GREEK PARCEL GILT SILVER EMBLEMATA
HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 3RD CENTURY B.C.
Each hammered from a single sheet and worked in repoussé from the back, the details chased from the front, each with three hunting scenes, each scene with a hunter on horseback pursuing a variety of animals, the top with the hunter riding to the left pursuing a stag, his dog attacking the stag from above, the hunter with his right hand raised, the center scene with a hunter at the left, galloping to the right pursuing a rearing bear, his spear drawn, and a hunter at the right moving left, his spear raised high in his right hand, pursuing a boar below, flanked by two hunting dogs, the horsemen each clad in a pleated skirt, the background stippled, enclosed by a raised ring with two concentric grooves, secured by eight evenly-spaced rivets, once attached to the tondo of a bowl, some gilding preserved throughout
Each: 5 5/8 in. (14.3 cm.) diameter; 106 g. (3.73 oz.) and 109.6 g. (3.87 oz.) (2)
