Lot Essay

The crowned R monogram is almost certainly that of Lord Redesdale. Patriarch of the Mitford clan, Algernon Bertram Mitford (1837-1916) was ennobled in 1902. His wife Clementine, whom he married in 1874, was the daughter of the 7th Earl of Airlie and they were obviously keen collectors. Much of their collection was sold both in 1919 and at Sotheby's London, 12 December 1958, lot 199; either sale may conceivably have included these consoles dessertes? This same brand featured on a pair of Louis XVI commodes à vantaux by Godefroy Dester, sold Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1992, lot 67.
