Lot Essay

An identical pair of vases, although with a further white marble plinth, was sold from the collection of Prince Paul of Yugoslavia, Villa Demidoff, Pratolino, Italy, Sotheby's House sale, 21-24 April 1969, lot 214. The latter vases had presumably originally been in the collection of Prince Paul Demidoff, before passing through his widow Princess Helena Demidoff, née Troubetsk to Princess Abamelek-Lazaref, née Demidoff and ultimately to H.R.H. Prince Paul of Yugoslavia.

A pair of porphyry vases with identical mounts from the collection of the Duchesse de Richelieu at the château de la Ferré-Bernard was sold at Sotheby's New York, 15 October 1983, lot 328. Another pair, although with blued-steel bodies, was sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 November 1993, lot 18.
