Lot Essay

The original uniform worn by the Phoenix Assurance firemen was 'a coat of crimson livery cloth lined with light green, crimson waistcoat, white cotton stockings and breeches, with an arm badge on a white ground with ornaments in gold.' The men's boots cost 18 shillings a pair and were issued once every three years. The uniform was topped off with a distinctive leather hat.
