A Rare Celadon Mortar
Yuan/early Ming dynasty, 14th-15th century
Heavily potted and weighted towards the bottom, with deep rounded sides encircled by a shallow groove above the almost flat base and flaring upwards towards a molded band below the rim, the exterior and rim covered with a glaze of grey-green tone, the interior unglazed and smooth from use; together with a small Longquan celadon pear-shaped vase, Song dynasty, with lipped rim, covered with a glaze of soft grey-green color

Lot Essay

Virtually identical Longquan mortars were recovered from the Sinan wreck off the coast of Korea, and are illustrated in the Special Exhibition of Cultural Relics Found off the Sinan Coast, National Museum of Korea, Seoul, 1977, pls. 104-6, where they are shown with celadon-glazed pestles.
