A SWISS GOLD SNUFF-BOX
Geneva, circa 1800, maker's marks rubbed
Octagonal box, the cover engine-turned with two coin pattern bands flanked by bands of vertical reeding, the centre decorated with a polished gold rectangle engraved with a young lady standing full-length next to a garland of vine and holding a heart with scroll inscribed 'L'AMITIE', the borders stamped with floral motifs on a matted ground, the sides engine-turned with panels of horizontal reeding, the canted corners stamped with floral scrolls on a sabl ground, the base centred by an almond-shaped reserve stamped with a floral rosette, on a ground of four panels engine-turning of diametrically opposed diagonal reeding, within a zig-zag border enclosing flowers, the inside of the lid engraved 'Henry 8..th Duke.'
