This lantern, with its ribbon-fretted cresting and jewel-embossed escutcheons with spiked finials, is designed in the 'Old English' or Elizabethan manner popularised by the architect Richard Bridgens in his Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration, 1832. A closely related lantern is in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace, and a pair to this was sold Christie's, London, 7 July 1994, lot 13 (£9,775 including premium).
