Lot Essay

The first German scientific periodical publication which was based on Le Journal des Sçavans, containing reviews, extracts from foreign publications and important original articles by some of the foremost scientists of the time.

The most important of these articles is the one by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz entitled "Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis" in the 1684 volume of Acta Eruditorum (pp.467-73) and present in this set. It is the first publication of the theory of differential calculus and led to the famous controversy between Newton and Leibniz because although Newton may have been the first to have made the discovery, Leibniz was the first to publish it. The argument led to a breach between English and Continental mathematics which was not healed until the early 19th-century. [Dibner 109; Horblit 66a; PMM 160; Norman 1326]
