The case with plain swan neck pediment to the hood, with outset front-fluted columns, blind fret banding to the neck of the trunk above a wavy top door with cross-banded and inlaid border, flanked by three-quarter length fluted pilasters, on plinth with chamfered angles and raised quatreform panel conforming to the trunk door, on later plain bracket feet, the 13in. cut-away brass dial with foliate spandrels to the silvered chapter rings with dotted minute track, the silvered centre with foliate scroll engraving and date aperture, signed on banners JOSEPH SIMPSON WIGTON, the cut steel hands later black painted, painted rolling moon to arch with farmhouse and boating scenes, the four pillar rack striking movement with anchor escapement, with spot-finished plates, later seatboard; composite, case last quarter 18th century and with associated hood, dial last quarter 18th century, movement 19th century -- 91in. (231cm.) high
