AN ENGLISH SILVER-MOUNTED HANGER
Circa 1760
With tapering hollow-ground single-edged blade double-edged towards the point, and with a narrow fuller bordering the back on each face, silver hilt comprising downturned scallop-shaped shell cast and chased in relief with a stag-hunting scene framed in rococo scrollwork, short downturned quillon (distorted) linked by a block en suite with the shell to a flattened knuckle-guard (replaced) engraved with foliate scrolls, pierced multifoil cap-pommel with button, and tapering faceted agate grip (replaced) with an engraved silver ferrule at the base, in original leather-covered wooden scabbard (split and distressed) with four engraved silver lockets, at intervals, and chape, the mouth-locket embossed and chased with the figure of a fox and hound and signed on the reverse by the sword-cutler 'Gregory In Chancery Lane'
