A similar palanquin shaft terminal was sold in these Rooms 27 April 1993, lot 171. That example differed in small details from the present terminal and was made in gilt copper rather than brass. Two further unpublished examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is very possible that they were all made for Tipoo Sultan in Mysore. Many of his weapons and furnishings had tiger-head motifs.
