AN OFFICER'S HELMET OF THE SAXON LEIBKÜRASSIERGARDE, 1806 MODEL

A rare and important helmet, with skull and mounts of brass retaining traces of gilt finish, the crest embossed with a large recumbent lion on each side and the crowned cypher FA on the front, and bearing black chenille above, the long peak and lower part of skull covered in animal skin (retaining traces of fur) richly adorned with oakleaves and acorns in gilt/brass, ornate side-plume socket (no plume), fine side-bosses (Classical female masks) and chinscales with engraved edges (most plates present) leather peak-lining and interior headband; together with two black/white feather plumes (3)
