Lot Essay
A hitherto unrecorded version of a picture of similar size in a private collection (L. Salerno, La natura morta italiana, Rome, 1984, p.15, fig.3.7, colour). That picture has a different background landscape and includes a stem of lilies in the barrow at the left; a plate of figs and chestnuts, here shown on the wheel of the barrow, is there depicted on the barrow itself.
A variant, with extensive differences and signed and dated 1583 but again of similar size, was sold at Sotheby's, 9 December 1987, lot 12
