Portrait of a girl of the Vivian family, full-length , in an elaborately embroidered brown dress, with a lamb, in a landscape

The sitter is presumed to be a member of the Vivian family which was based in Cornwall at the time that this portrait was painted. Little is known about the artist. Two other half-length portraits by him were sold at Sotheby's 16 July 1986, as lots 215 and 217. The former, which was signed and dated 1700, was of Hannah Vivian, wife of William Vivian, the latter, catalogued as a portrait of an unknown gentleman, may also have been a member of the Vivian family as it came from the same source. Burghende, most probably a foreign born itinerant artist, would appear to have settled in Cornwall for quite some time - over eight years separates his portrait of William Vivian from the present portrait. A half-length portrait of Dr Nathaniel Spry, a member of another well-known Cornish family, by Burghende, which is signed and dated 1703, is in the Royal Institute of Cornwall, Truro.
