BRONTË, Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848) and Anne (1820-1849). Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1846.
8° (168 x 103mm). With errata slip. No advertisements at end. (A few light soil marks.) Uncut in original green cloth by Westleys, London, with binder's ticket, covers blocked in blind with harp design and ornamental border, gilt-lettered spine (upper corners a little bumped), morocco-backed green cloth slipcase. Provenance: Philip H. Brown (ownership inscription, dated March [18]53) -- Philip Greely Brown of Portland (bookplate).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, second issue. The first issue bears the imprint of Aylott and Jones, and a few copies are in a binding with a geometrical design, without harp. 1000 copies were printed, but sales were few and in November 1848 a balance of 961 copies was transferred to Smith, Elder and Co. who re-issued the book with a cancel title-page, retaining the original date. Vander Poel's inserted typed note reads: 'while I hope someday to have the Aylott and Jones issue with the geometric design ... for the time being I must forget the great "I want!, I want!!" impulse deep within me and be satisfied with this copy of the second issue for which I paid $17.00. It is my opinion that a copy of even this second issue will bring in years to come a price almost ten times its value today.' Ashley I, p. 70; Hayward 266.
