The sitter on the left of the picture has traditionally been identified as George Palmes (1776-1851) of Naburn Hall, Yorkshire, the eldest son of John Palmes and Susannah, daughter of Thomas Wharrie, of Hull. He married Margaret Isabella, daughter of William Lindsay, of Oaklands, Lanarkshire, on 15 January 1810, by whom he had five sons. The interior has previously been identified as York Assembly Rooms however this would seem unlikely on the basis of the architecture and decoration. The 'York Courant' was established in 1725.
