By the 1870s the various schools of Lucknow, Patna and Calcutta painting had died out. It is probable that the artist of the present watercolours originally came from Calcutta and was familiar with the work of Shaikh Muhammad Amir of Karraya. The artist will have accompanied an English patron on his travels to Lucknow to play polo. It is unusual to see company painting of this quality dated as late as the 1870s as most work of this period was derivative and less refined.
