FAULKNER, William. The Mansion. New York: Random House, 1959.

8o. Original blue cloth; pictorial dust jacket (spine panel slightly age-toned with a tiny abrasion, slight rubbing to extremities); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: MAUD FAULKNER, his mother (presentation inscription and her signature "Maud Falkner. Oct 5, '59" [see note below] on front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION, TRADE ISSUE, FIRST PRINTING of "the final chapter of, and the summation of, a work conceived and begun in 1925" (prefatory note). PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO HIS MOTHER on the front free endpaper: "To Mother, with love Billy." ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY FAULKNER on the title page: "William Faulkner."

At the time of his RAF application, Faulkner lied about numerous facts, including his birthdate and birthplace, in an attempt to pass himself as British. He also spelled his name with a "u" in Faulkner, believing it looked more British (in meeting with RAF officials he affected a British accent). His family members retained the Falkner spelling as Maud signed on the pastedown in this copy. Maud Butler Falkner died on October 19,1960. The list of works by Faulkner at the beginning is marked in ink and contains the pencil addition of "The Reivers" (Faulkner's last novel published in 1962). Massey 141; Petersen A52.2b.
