Isabella, My Friend

Painted in a style which combines the cubist planes of Willem de Kooning and the modeled almost clay-like surfaces of Lucian Freud, Francis Newton Souza's later nudes exhibit a bold and unrestrained sexuality not found in his earlier portraits. His women posses the energy and emancipation of modern and abstract expressionist paintings but still maintain a sense of classical Indian tradition immortalized in temple sculpture.
