Frederick Arthur Bridgman
(Lots )
Born in Tuskagee, Alabama on 10th November 1847, Bridgman later studied at the Brooklyn Art Association, as well as taking antique life classes at the National Academy of Design. By 1866, he had moved to Paris, where as a student at the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts, he was taught for two years by Jean-Lèon Gèrôme (1842-1904). It was not, however, until visiting Africa that Bridgman began to concentrate on Orientalist subjects.
Bridgman's voyage on the Nile began in Cairo on 22nd December 1873 and he arrived at the Second Cataract, his destination eight hundred miles to the south, just over six weeks later. The drawings offered below were made on his return journey to Cairo, where he disembarked on 2nd April 1874.
