2 volumes, 4° (196 x 135mm). Titles in Greek and Latin, text in Greek. Printer's device at end of each volume, one woodcut criblé initial, initial spaces with guide-letter. (Two small holes in final 3 leaves of Iliad touching device.) Late 17th-century vellum over pasteboard, red leather spine labels, sprinkled edges (small tear at one fore-edge). Provenance: Joannes Coster (deleted inscriptions and presentation inscription to:); Cornelius Midlum (gift inscription from Coster dated August 1654, annotations and translations into Latin, occasionally shaved, probably in his or Coster's hand); G.J. Wright (collation note dated 1723); Alexander Murray (1775-1813).
A fine copy, rarely found complete, of the works of Homer in the original Greek. The text is based primarily on that of the Aldine 1517 edition. Among the volumes' previous owners is Alexander Murray, Scottish linguist and professor of oriental languages at Edinburgh University.
Martens had already printed separately the first two books of the Iliad in 1521 (Nijhoff-Kronenberg 1105) when he decided to print the rest of the Iliad and, in a separate volume, the Odyssey. These were printed in the same type as the 1521 books of the Iliad and, although completed two years later in 1523, were meant to complement those first two books. There were, however, not sufficient remaining copies of books I and II to satisfy demand, and so it became necessary to reprint the first 8 quires containing the first two books.
