Little is known about the Rotterdam painter Jacob de Villeers, whose oeuvre was first defined by W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandtschýler, 1983, IV, p.2879, n0s 2922-2931 and IV, p.4091, n02472. It is limited to landscapes, which Sumowski has defined as representative of the idealistic late mannerist type, whose sources are to be found in Flemish prototypes, such as Kerstiaen de Keuninck and Joos de Momper. Villeers depicts ruins in steep mountains in brown tonality which recall the idiom of Rembrandt and Hercules Seghers. His style comes closest to that of the Amsterdam painter Roelant Roghman, with whom he is often confused.
