Five lines plus signature at bottom of a manuscript warrant, 2 pages, small 4to, dampstains. An arrest warrant under authority of George II for one Jonathan Woodson, who had sued Jonathan Stowall but failed to prosecute his case, making him liable for court costs and attorney fees. Here, Jefferson confirms that "By virtue of this writ to me directed I have Taken the within name'd Jno. Woodson whose body I have ready to satisfie Jno. DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY THE FATHER OF THE THIRD PRESIDENT ARE RARE. Peter Jefferson's grandfather Thomas had served as surveyor of roads for Virginia from 1687-1697; when Peter Jefferson relocated to Albemarle County in 1745, he was appointed deputy surveyor under Joshua Fry. Together, the two explored and mapped the extensive western lands claimed by Virginia. The highly detailed Fry-Jefferson map was completed in 1751 and remained influential for several decades. (2)
